“Gather the Jews in Israel, so they’re easier to hunt down”

This is a cross-post from Student Rights

****

There’s a video that’s being circulated around the United States and I think it’s worthwhile that it gets seen in this country. What’s happening at university campuses over there is very similar to the issues we face in terms of radicalisation and extremism. The video shows us precisely what runs through the mind of a Muslim Students Association (MSA-US) member at the University of California San Diego.

No matter what your opinion of the speaker, David Horowitz is – it should be glaringly obvious that the girl’s response to his question in this clip is a call to genocide, plainly and simply. She states that she fears being arrested by Homeland Security for supporting Hamas (as any glorification of terror is illegal) and flippantly dismisses Horowitz’s referral to Israel Apartheid Week as ‘Hitler Youth Week’. This may seem divisive from him at first, but when you see her answer to his last question; it’s more than a justified definition of what extremists are promoting on campuses.

religious idiots round up: vengeful volcanoes

of course, nobody should be surprised that when a natural disaster occurs, the usual suspects jump on the bandwagon to explain why it proves their wacky theologies and that G!D Is Having a good old Smite at people of whom they disapprove or, alternatively, that it’s all part of the dastardly plans of the illuminati or reptilian space overlords.

a reptilian overlord yesterday

anyway, we’ve had boobquake, gayquake and immorality-inspired flooding so, predictably, our new icelandic friend eyjafjallajökull has been pressed into surface for this purpose, proving variously that:

1. we should never have turned on that large hadron collider

2. iceland is being too tolerant of neo-paganism and europe of gay rights

3. G!D Disapproves of “obamacare”

4. people are having a go at the pope

5. aliens (or satan) are doing space paintings with ufos

The IFE Crushed in Tower Hamlets

The Islamist powerplay of the Jamaati-Islami entryist group, the IFE, in Tower Hamlets has come to a dismal end with this piece of news:

Lutfur Rahman, the Labour leader of Tower Hamlets council backed by radical Islamists, has lost his job. At last night’s Labour group meeting, he was replaced as leader by another Labour councillor, Helal Abbas. Abbas is the man who protested last year that Tower Hamlets council was controlled by the fundamentalist Islamic Forum of Europe (IFE), based at the hardline East London Mosque.

[...]

As well as Mr Rahman, Lutfur Ali, the IFE-linked assistant chief executive of the council, lost his job as a result of the programme. The Respect party’s Abjol Miah, an activist in the IFE, came third with 16 per cent of the vote in the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency – and is no longer a councillor. Respect, which won 12 seats at the 2006 council elections, is now down to just one seat. Respect’s George Galloway, who boasted that he “owed more than I can say” to the IFE, was humiliated, also coming third in Poplar and Limehouse and failing even to turn up to the count.

She Said

Two standout passages from a superb interview of Ayaan Hirsi-Ali in the Observer, by Emma Brockes. Brockes calls her “narcissistically provocative” before going on to write, “To Hirsi Ali, the act of speaking out, of saying what no one else will say, seems at this stage to be almost a pathology; to override all other considerations”.

The first of those passages, on the moral bankruptcy of post-modern Western feminism and feminist intellectuals in particular. Hirsi-Ali is rightly critical of the of their stupendously narrow and blinkered response to the denial of basic rights of women in Muslim-majority societies:

Eyes Wide Open

Not to be missed, it’s Brokeback Mountain for Frummies:

Aaron (Zohar Strauss), a respectable butcher in Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community, is married to Rivka (Tinkerbell) and is a dedicated father of four children. One day, he meets Ezri (Ran Danker), a handsome twenty-two year old student, and soon falls in love with him. He then starts to neglect his family and community life, swept away by his love and lust for Ezri. Meanwhile, paralleling this relationship, a neighbouring shopkeeper persists in seeing a man of her own choosing, even though she’s been promised by her father to another. Eventually, guilt, torment and pressure from the community will catch up with the doomed lovers, leading them to make radical decisions…

Showing as part of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival 2010 and in cinemas from 14 May 2010.

Reasons To Be Cheerful

Whatever the outcome of the post-election horsetrading now in full swing between Lib Dems and the two other major parties, there were some election results that deserve to be celebrated. First of all there were the utter defeat of the two extreme, sectarian parties of the BNP and Respect.

BNP Smashed!

Not only did the BNP fail to elect Nick Griffin or Simon Darby to Parliament, they also failed to take any council seats in Barking & Dagenham and Stoke-on-Trent. The BNP also lost their seats in Wigan, Oldham, Manchester and Leeds City Council.

Galloway and the sectarian RESPECT Coalition project Smashed!

George Galloway came third in Poplar and Limehouse and lost his seat to Jim Fitzpatrick, Minister of Farming. Clive Searl of the Respect Party explain why Galloway and the Respect Party fared so miserably on Socialist Unity:

G!D the “misogynist” and other cyclical lepidopterisms

thanks to the delightful sonia from pickled politics, i ended up in a jolly discussion over at butterflies and wheels on feminism and religion. they seem to have closed the comments for some reason, but i still thought it was an interesting subject and thought i’d continue it here if anyone (like ophelia benson or amy clare) was interested. there are some unresolved questions. amy asks:

“Do Anglicans, even moderates, really think of G!D as a sexless being? I was under the impression that most moderate religious people still think of G!D as male. People could use the singular ‘they’ and refer to a ‘parent’ if they were really that bothered.”

No They Ain’t Voting (Can’t Trust Them!)

Catchy tune and lyrics from Hizb-ut-Tahrir. Quilliam Foundation gets a name-check and Noam Chomsky gets a “big shout”. Shame about the dodgy content and sentiments.

Our reaction:

Khilafah? CYAN’T TRUST IT!
Hizb-ut-Tahrir? CYAN’T TRUST IT!
WHY COZ THEY IDIOTS AND THAT’S A
FACT AND I AIN’T JOKING…

George Galloway: Expect More Lies

This is cross-post by Terry Glavin:

****

Fiction: Reported in the Globe and Mail: “I didn’t give any money to Hamas, I gave it to the ministry of health in Gaza to pay for the salaries of the doctors and nurses who hadn’t been paid. By the way, we’re talking about 20 odd thousand pounds, not millions. It’s a symbolic donation. I gave it to the ministry of health in Gaza and I’m proud to have done so.”

Fact: By Galloway’s own admission, broadcast on several Arab television stations: “I, now, here, on behalf of myself, my sister Yvonne Ridley, and the two Respect councillors – Muhammad Ishtiaq and Naim Khan – are giving three cars and 25,000 pounds in cash to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. Here is the money. This is not charity. This is politics.” Not charity, but politics. Not to “doctors and nurses who hadn’t been paid,” but to the Hamas gangster “Prime Minister” Ismail Haniyeh who, in fact, is not and was not the Prime Minister of Palestine.

America’s Non-Controversial Christian Censorship

Glen Greenwald debunks the notion that censorship and religious offence-taking is now the mainstay of Islam alone. In particular, Greenwald dismantles Ross Douthat’s (of the New York Times) accusations that only Islamic sensibilities are granted special privileges, as the tribalistic and selective tropes of a right-wing Christian fundamentalist hack.

Douthat writes in the New York Times:

In a way, the muzzling of “South Park” is no more disquieting than any other example of Western institutions’ cowering before the threat of Islamist violence. . . . But there’s still a sense in which the “South Park” case is particularly illuminating. . . . [I]t’s a reminder that Islam is just about the only place where we draw any lines at all. . . .Our culture has few taboos that can’t be violated, and our establishment has largely given up on setting standards in the first place.  Except where Islam is concerned.
