Respect Party: Disrespecting Women

Pots, Prams and Politics. Flyer for RESPECT Youth event tomorrow.
Pots, Prams and Politics. Flyer for tomorrow’s RESPECT Youth event.

Respect Youth are holding a women only event in Bethnal Green tomorrow to support Abjol Miah’s bid to succeed George Galloway as Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow. Here is a flyer (pdf) for the event.

If their website is to be believed, Respect are committed to equal rights for women. They claim to want to see a world in which a woman’s contribution is fully valued and rewarded. Noble stuff, but not exactly borne out by the evidence of this flyer.

Entitled “Pots, Prams and Politics”, it is a fairly shocking example of sexism. Not only does the title make painfully clear what Respect considers a woman’s role to be (in the kitchen/looking after children/getting Respect re-elected) – there’s a not-so-progressive subtitle too.

Behind every man is a Woman and behind every leading woman is her Respect.

Malaysian Islamists Against Women

Malaysian opposition party, the PAS (Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party), has requested that the National Fatwa Council declare the Islamic women’s rights group Sisters In Islam (SIS) haram “if its activities activities is (sic) found to be contrary to the Islamic teachings and principles”; a clear call for them to be banned.

The call was made in a motion that was tabled by Shah Alam division at the party’s 55th general assembly here yesterday.

The motion which was adopted without debate also called on the fatwa council to investigate in full the activities of carried out by the organisation.

The division in its motion said the SIS’ activities were dangerous as they could cause confusion among the Muslims.

“We are aware that their approach can easily be accepted by the Muslims and this is dangerous as it can twist their aqidah, especially the young and those who went through the secular education,” it said.
