You read it here first

Several weeks after we at the Spittoon first broke the story, the Independent has now published an article on Hizb ut-Tahrir’s links with the SRE Islamic Campaign to end sex and relationship education for children.

Patel’s organisation, SREIslamic, was established eight months ago to encourage Muslims to respond to the Government’s consultation about whether to make SRE compulsory and extend it to five-year-olds. Since then, the organisation claims, it has held 40 workshops across the country and collected tens of thousands of signatures from Muslims opposed to the measures.

But Patel is not only a concerned parent and campaigner. According to his website, he is also a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamist organisation that Tony Blair considered banning in 2005. Patel’s brother, Jalaluddin, is the former UK head of the political party, which is barred in countries including Germany, Russia and Egypt. Should we be concerned that, like other far-right or religious groups in Britain, SREIslamic might be using a sensitive community grievance to pursue a wider political agenda?0

The Islamo-Stalinist (Part II)

Taqiuddin al-Nabhani (Founder of Hizb ut-Tahrir)

Taqiuddin al-Nabhani (Founder of Hizb ut-Tahrir)

This is not your average granddad who has just been dragged away from his game of chess.  This is a rare picture of the great Mujtahid Mutlaq Sheikh Taqiuddin al-Nabhani.

Despite his medieval political outlook, as we can see from the picture, Nabhani obviously liked wearing ‘Western’ suits. He was also quite progressive in other matters.  For example he allowed looking at pornography, touching the opposite sex and even kissing girls. However, these opinions did not help his group wherever they came into contact with regular Muslims; many were outraged by his opinions. Politically his group suffered even worse.

In my previous article I highlighted his links with Arab nationalism and Ba’athism, here we will examine his links with other twentieth century political ideologies.

Hizb ut-Tahrir “Brandishing the Sword”

There are many people who try to argue that Hizb ut-Tahrir is a non-violent organisation. That we can use them to prevent al-Qaeda style extremism. That they really only represent a peaceful opposition movement to current regimes around the world. This is not the case.

This is a guest post by Abdul Qadeem Zallum, global leader of Hizb ut-Tahrir between 1977 and 2003.

[T]he issue pertaining the obligation of ruling by Islam and preventing the rule by Kufr is a vital issue, because the Legislator (swt) has made the measure that should be undertaken towards it a measure of life and death; thus, he who does not rule by Islam and rules by a Kufr system should either retract or be killed.

Hizb ut-Tahrir: Rejected By Everybody

A few days ago I blogged about an event being advertised for Saturday night. The new Hounslow Muslim Forum was advertising an event which would bring together (at a Hounslow comprehensive) Daud Abdullah, Hizb ut-Tahrir and the Metropolitan Police. There have since been a few developments.

Council leader Peter Thompson this week wrote to the secondary school in Lampton Avenue urging staff to cancel the booking ‘before it is too late’.

“We have real concerns that the lack of balanced debate could inflame perceived grievances and lead to a breakdown in community cohesion,” he said. “In truth the only purpose of the event appears to be an attempt to increase fear and mistrust amongst Muslims in the UK and in our borough.

“The use of publicly-owned premises such as your school by groups holding extreme religious, ideological or political views, who aim to create or exploit grievances and community tensions to the detriment of the whole community, should not be permitted.”

Daud Abdullah and Hizb ut-Tahrir in Hounslow

Flyer for Hounslow Muslim Forum's inaugural event, 'Putting Contest 2 In Context'

This Saturday 11th July, Lampton School, a comprehensive in Hounslow, is to host the inaugural meeting of Hounslow Muslim Forum. At the event, this new group will be discussing Contest 2, the government’s latest counter-extremism strategy with a panel of speakers and Inspector Alan Murphy of Metropolitan Police “Prevent and Engagement” Team, Hounslow.

This is all well and good, but have a look at the bottom of the flyer where the groups which make up Hounslow Muslim Forum are listed. One name stands out – Hizb ut-Tahrir.

At the same time that the Sunday Times revealed Hizb ut-Tahrir’s violent ambitions, the Metropolitan Police is planning to get involved with (and a state school is planning to host) an event which advertises its links to Hizb ut-Tahrir on its flyers.

Hizb ut-Tahrir Attempts Coup in Pakistan

The Sunday Times reports:

British militants are pushing for the overthrow of the Pakistani state. Followers of the fundamentalist group Hizb ut-Tahrir have called for a “bloodless military coup” in Islamabad and the creation of the caliphate in which strict Islamic laws would be rigorously enforced.

Members of the group, which describes itself as the Liberation party in Britain but is banned in Pakistan, revealed last week that it had targeted the country as a base from which to spread Islamic rule across the world.

The Sunday Times has obtained the names of a dozen British Hizb ut-Tahrir activists based in Lahore and Karachi, or commuting between Britain and Pakistan. There are believed to be many more.

Oh, and remember Tayyib Muqeem – the ex-boxer who could only give the weakest explanations for assaulting Maajid Nawaz in Lahore a few months ago – well it turns out that he is even more unpleasant than previously suspected.

HT at Regent’s Park Mosque

Can you spot any mention of Hizb ut-Tahrir?

Can you spot any mention of Hizb ut-Tahrir?

Hizb ut-Tahrir have a problem. Long gone are the glory days when they could attract thousands to a conference held at the famous National Indoor Arena in Birmingham (where Gladiators was shot). Now their “Birmingham” conference is being held in, er, West Bromwich and at the not-so-glamourous Bethel Convention Centre.

It gets worse though. In a clear sign of what they have been reduced to, they’re now skulking around organising purportedly independent events at major mosques and misleading other Muslims about who they are – just to get them to turn up to events run by HT members. Oh dear.

What are you?

“You are not British, Pakistani, Indian, Bengali, Arab or African.  These are colonial identities, you are only a Muslim and that’s what god wants you to be” (Member of Hizb-ut-Tahrir)

After the Second World War issues of national identity began to change.  The introduction of foreign cheap labour (from former colonies) brought with it foreign cultures and traditions.  The newly arriving immigrants retained a desire to one day return to their home nations as ‘rich men of high statuses’.  This mindset encouraged them to lead a non-confrontational life here in the UK.  They tolerated discrimination and soft-racism mainly because they did not intend to stay in the UK permanently.

HT’s Big American Flop

I recently blogged about the news that Hizb ut-Tahrir America had come out of the closet, it was organising events in its own name and even planning a grand Khilafah conference at the Aqsa School in Illinois. I was not entirely sure what to make of this news; possibly it was a sign that HT America was growing in numbers, possibly it was a desperate last throw of the dice by an organisation rapidly fading to nothing.

Anyway, if you now go to the conference’s rather snazzy website (Khilafah Conference 2009) then you are immediately confronted by an ‘Alert’.

We are sad to inform you that the Aqsa school venue has canceled on us. This venue is no longer willing to hold our conference. We will update you when we have a new venue available.

Not exactly a triumphant launch for HT America. Indeed, it’s rather reminiscent of al-Macaroon’s recent damp squib of a relaunch.

Hizb ut-Tahrir America Goes Public

Hizb ut-Tahrir, the global Islamist revolutionary group founded by an Islamo-Stalinist and famed for its incessant calls for Khilafah (Caliphate), appears to have gone public in the United States. Whereas HT had previously operated in America only from behind aliases and front groups, now it is operating openly and in its own name. As Shikwa has explained here before, this is a development which should concern all Americans.

Here is the promotional video for their inaugural event: Khilafah Conference 2009 – Fall of Capitalism & Rise of Islam

It will be held on Sunday, 19th July at Aqsa School, a private co-educational Islamic school in Bridgeview, Illinois which has only 301 students; HT America is clearly not expecting the kind of attendance HT Indonesia managed to gather in 2007. Indeed, it looks like they’re expecting an exraordinarily pitiful number of attendees. That said, the fact that HT America feels confident enough to move into the open, rather than cowering in the shadows, is a depressing development.
