Hamas: A Democratic, Legitimate Government?

We are endlessly being told that Hamas won an election in 2006 and therefore should be considered the democratic, legitimate rulers of Palestine. This is a particularly perverse understanding of democracy and legitimate government.

Democracy is not simply about holding an election once in a blue moon, it is about allowing the elements vital to a democracy (free spech, free press, freedom of association and so on) to flourish. It is about holding free and fair elections on a regular basis. It most certainly is not about killing opponents or this:

The Islamist movement Hamas has told Palestinians in the Gaza Strip not to take part in elections called by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

Hamas said the elections set for 24 January had been called without its agreement and were illegal.

It said anyone in Gaza who co-operated with the poll would be “dealt with by the ministry or by other means”.

Terrorist? What Terrorist?

The Times reports on a rally organised by United Against Fascism (UAF) at BBC Headquarters tonight to protest Nick Griffin’s appearance on Question Time.

Speakers at the rally will include Ken Livingstone and Peter Hain. Mr Livingstone is to be applauded for employing his stentorian voice to rouse the 1,000 protestors expected. The UAF website interview with Mr Livingstone contained this nugget from Ken:

The BBC should withdraw its invitation to Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time. A court ruled this week that the fascist BNP’s membership rules illegally discriminate on grounds of race. This is only part of the picture. When the BNP is given a major media platform for its message of bigotry, race and religious hatred, hate attacks by thugs on the streets increase.

When an Islamist Kills an Islamist in a Mosque Why Does Nobody Make a Sound?

It’s not often that I find myself agreeing with anything from Sky News, but their Tim Marshall has written a fantastic blog entry about the recent fighting in Gaza between Hamas and the group Jund Ansar Allah.

Thirty Palestinians killed. Women and children caught in the crossfire. Missiles fired at a Mosque. Muslim prisoners ‘executed’ in cold blood. A massacre. Media restrictions.

A familiar tale? Indeed. International outrage and demonstrations in the streets of London? Nope.

And why might that be? Why it’s simple. The Palestinians were were killed by Palestinians and, it would appear from the lack of reaction that in those circumstances their lives are cheap, but when they are killed by Israelis it is an outrage.
