Islamist Doublespeak and the “People of the Book”

just to introduce myself and give a bit of context, for those who haven’t come across me before. i am what you might call a “grassroots activist” particularly with regard to interfaith dialogue activities. i’m a traditionally observant jew (although i wasn’t always observant), from a sephardi/indian/baghdadi background, although i have a pretty wide acquaintance across the jewish community from the secularist ultra-left to the religious ultra-right. i don’t speak for anyone but myself and i do not hold a brief for any community or political organisation. although i’d describe myself as a “religious zionist”, that probably doesn’t mean what you think it means (i’m also a supporter of palestinian self-determination) but that’s a discussion for another day.

Muhajiroun’s idea of a debate: RIOT!

A member of Muhajiroun trying to enforce segregation earlier today

Well, the debate between Douglas Murray and Anjem “Andy” Choudary was scheduled to take place tonight in Conway Hall, Holborn.

The whole thing was a set up. A press release from the Centre for Social Cohesion explains:

Al-Muhajiroun hijacked the debate, ‘Sharia law vs British law’, which was organised by a student society. Members of the radical organisation responsible for the Luton protests took over the debate: the SIA – licensed security guards were al-Muhajiroun and members of the group attempted to intimidate and segregate the audience…The security guards were members of al-Muhajiroun. The student society had neglected to mention that the event would be segregated. The society’s “independent chair” was involved in the assault. It soon became clear that the student society was, if not a front group for al-Muhajiroun, then at least Islamist-sympathisers hijacked by the extremist group.

Nick Griffin: Lowlights even for a Lowlife

Nick Griffin Marching With The National Front

Nick Griffin Marching With The National Front

The Times has a profile of the BNP’s regurgitated mouldy egg of a leader, Nick Griffin. Many of the details of his career you will be familiar with but others help further illustrate just what a weird and nasty piece of work he is.

By Griffin’s account, he lost his left eye in an accident when a discarded bullet exploded in a pile of wood he was burning at his home in 1990. Others have speculated that the accident happened during “survivalist manoeuvres” – a version lent some credence because his wife, Jackie, was not informed until a week later.

Griffin’s anti-Israel stance led him to make a fundraising trip to Libya at Colonel Muammar Gadaffi’s expense in 1988 (a few weeks before the Lockerbie bombing) and to laud Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, both of whom also shared Griffin’s antipathy to world capitalism, homosexuality and women’s rights.

Unite Against (all) Fascism

The irrepressible David T over at Harry’s Place reprints an open letter from the Socialist Workers Party. It follows on from the Unite Against Fascism stunt yesterday when Nick Griffin, the leader of the BNP was harangued and pelted with eggs outside parliament.

A BNP goon outside parliament yesterday

I have to admit – yes, it might have been entirely counterproductive, but there was something quite fun about watching that scumbag get pelted with eggs and having to be evacuated by his thick-necked goons.

However, away from the all shenanigans David T’s assessment of things is characteristically spot on.

We simply can’t afford to have the SWP lead the anti-fascist initiative against the BNP. It is doomed to fail. They just aren’t up to the job and lack the political capital needed to create a genuinely progressive liberal front against fascism.

Muslims vs Takfiris

Here’s an encouraging story for a change, involving the Muslim community of Luton.

The latest violence erupted as arguments raged between fellow Muslims shortly after Friday morning prayers in the Bury Park area of the town.

Passing traffic ground to a halt as the large group of moderates confronted about a dozen extremists.

As the radical Muslims began to set up their stall, they were surrounded by a crowd shouting ‘we don’t want you here’ and ‘move on, move on’.

Angry words were exchanges and scuffles broke out. The extremists responded by shouting “Shame on you” and “Get back to your synagogue”.

Mr [Farasat] Latif said: ‘We have been fighting these Muslim extremists for you. They represent nobody but themselves.

‘The community decided to move them on because the police won’t. We have asked them, but they did nothing.

What is and isn’t Islam?

By Dr. Nikolaos van Dam

IT is not only important to explain what Islam really is, but it is also important to make a distinction between what Islam involves, and what people have incorrectly associated with and attributed to it.

What is the relation between Islam and the actions of people that practice the Muslim faith? In my opinion there are many things which have very little to do with Islam as a religion, but are nevertheless ascribed to it because the people who are linked to it happen to be Muslims.

Certain radical actions have been carried out by Muslim individuals or groups in the name of Islam, but those actions are not supported by the majority of Muslims, and are generally disapproved of by them, although sometimes their disapproval is not explicit enough to create the impression that the radical Muslims that carry out these actions do not in any way represent any Muslim majority.
