Quilliam hosts Mehdi Hasan and the Conservatives

Presenting the antisemitic, anti-Sunni, anti-atheist, ‘non-Muslims are cattle‘, ‘Muslim World-ist‘, big-C Conservative hating ‘progressive leftist‘ - that’s right folks, Mehdi Hasan hosted by Quilliam Foundation and the Conservatives in a day-long love fest, apparently. Who would have guessed it?

This is a time of unprecedented change for British Muslims. With Muslims facing rising levels of anti-Muslim sentiment, hostility due to terrorism and other factors, questions are increasingly being asked about what it means to be British and Muslim both in the challenging present and uncertain future. It is in this context that we, in co-operation with the Al-Karimia Institute and the St Paul’s Institute, would like to invite you to the first in a series of events designed to build trust and confidence between Muslim thought leaders.

This is an invitation-only event, aimed for a limited number of some of Britain’s most influential Muslim thinkers, activists and scholars to attend and discuss issues of socio-political importance. The gathering will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, on Saturday 23rd January 2010.

Gordon Brown’s bounced cheque

Seems like Gordon Brown isn’t just incompetent when it comes to running the nation’s finances, apparently he couldn’t even keep his own affairs in order at university.

His old landlord tells the Telegraph about the time his £3 rent cheque bounced. If you’re that way inclined, you can buy it on ebay here.

Peter Tatchell stands down as Green candidate

The human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has announced he will stand down as a parliamentary candidate for the Green party in Oxford East. He explains:

I was selected as the Green Party candidate for Oxford East in April 2007. A month later, I was badly beaten around the head by neo-Nazis during an attempted Gay Pride parade in Moscow.

This exacerbated the brain damage caused when I was bashed unconscious by President Mugabe’s bodyguards in Brussels in 2001, after attempting to make a citizen’s arrest of the Zimbabwean leader on charges of torture.

Following the Moscow assault, I never rested and recuperated. I carried on campaigning, with a very heavy schedule of commitments in Oxford East. After several months, I was severely exhausted. This stress and exhaustion probably intensified the damage and thwarted my recovery.

Why Is Hizb ut Tahrir Receiving Government Funding?

This is a press release by the Centre for Social Cohesion (CSC)

****

In today’s Prime Minister’s Questions, Conservative Party Leader David Cameron challenged Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the findings of the Centre for Social Cohesion’s (CSC) latest report, Hizb ut-Tahrir: Ideology and Strategy.
Cameron, who has promised to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT), asked the Prime Minister why the Islamic Shakhsiyah Foundation (ISF), a charity run by HT members that manages two primary schools and a nursery in London, has received over £113,000 in government grants – a fact revealed by the CSC in the last month. Following the revelations, Haringey Council suspended ISF’s funding.

As the CSC report shows, HT is a revolutionary Islamist group that supports violent jihad and is using front groups to embed its divisive ideology into local communities. Cameron stated today that HT is a group that says

A Hearing For Khomeinists

This is a cross-posted article by habibi from Harry’s Place:

****

Next Monday Parliament’s Communities and Local Government Committee will hold a hearing about government policy on extremism.

Preventing Violent Extremism

Oral evidence session

Prevent is a cross-cutting policy that is led across Government by the Office of Security and Counter Terrorism (OSCT) which is part of the Home Office. Its aim is “to stop radicalisation, reduce support for terrorism and violent extremism and discourage people from becoming terrorists.” In this inquiry the Committee will be considering the effectiveness of the ‘Prevent’ programme to date, and its likely effectiveness in the future, with particular reference to whether the Prevent programme is the right way of addressing the problem of violent extremism in communities, and whether the Government’s strategy for dealing with communities has been effective, and appropriately targeted. The Committee will also consider whether the programme has reached those it aimed to target, how the programme has been received by communities and whether the Government has been speaking to the right people when formulating the ‘Prevent’ programme.

Over to the Islamist Extreme Right, again

Nick Cohen surveys the continuing rehabilitation of the Islamist extreme-right by the Labour Party. The depressing phenomenon of pandering to “faith groups” has been legitimised at the cost of suppressing liberalising voices within the Muslim community. In practice, this turns out to be nothing more than a strategy, by John Denham and friends, to re-empower the same old gang of non-representative Islamist dinosaurs, religious supremacists, alleged war criminals, homophobes and pathological anti-semites unfamiliar with the concept of freedom of expression that make up the MCB and its core support group.

Last Sunday, John Denham, the communities secretary, announced: “Anyone wanting to build a more progressive society would ignore the powerful role of faith at their peril. We should continually seek ways of encouraging and enhancing the contribution faith communities make on the central issues of our time.”

why it is wrong to talk about “banning shari’a law”

it has been brought to my attention by my esteemed colleagues here at the spittoon that one of the aims of the “one law for all” campaign, who are organising a rally on saturday 21 november, to “expose the discriminatory nature of religious law” and “put a stop to shari’a once and for all” because “opposing shari’a law is a crucial step in defending universal and equal rights”.

i will reiterate the reasons that i cannot support this:

1. what about jewish batei din and anglican ecclesiastical law?

some might consider this selfish, but shari’a courts must be allowed if the state is not to be guilty of severe double standards in respect of both jewish halakhah and christian canon law. although, obviously, some of the speakers (like the british humanist association and the national secular society) would argue that they would ban the lot and, indeed, maryam namazie herself says:

Osama Saeed Goes on the Defensive

This is a cross post by Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens

****

On his blog, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Glasgow Central, Osama Saeed, seems to have taken issue with a pamphlet I wrote last week, which cites his 2006 support for pro al-Qaeda preacher Anwar al-Awlaki. Firstly, this should be put into some kind of perspective: if a PPC who defined himself as a Christian wrote in support of a promoter of the Ku Klux Klan who had extensive links with white supremacist terrorists, it would rightly prompt national outrage. Mr. Saeed will be subject to the same standards as any other potential MP, and he had better get used to it.

Thank You, Osama

This is a cross-post by Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens from the StandPoint blog

****

I have previously blogged about Scotland’s leading Islamist (and prospective MP for Glasgow Central), Osama Saeed, having to return more than half of the £200,000 he was given by his mate Alex Salmond to set up an event called Islam Fest. The event never happened, and questions were still being asked about where the remaining funds went.

Saeed’s Scottish Islamic Foundation (SIF) repaid nearly £130,000, and today the BBC tells us what happened to the remaining £70,000 of taxpayer money:

Organisers have repaid almost £130,000 and said the remaining £70,000 has been spent on setting up the event and securing partners.

Brill. So that’s £70,000 of OUR money that Osama has unceremoniously flushed down the toilet. Thank you Osama. Next time try to waste your own money on these little Islamist vanity projects.

Boris fails to tackle Islamic extremism

Good to see the Centre for Social Cohesion giving the Tories a run for their money on their record on anti-Islamism and making sure they behave themselves when they (inevitably) come to power. Conservative Home published this challenge to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson by Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens:

Earlier this year, the Mayor’s office backed the East London Mosque (ELM), who on New Year’s Day 2009 broadcast on their premises a video sermon of pro al-Qaeda hate preacher Anwar al Awlaki.

In the above response to the CSC from the Mayor’s office, they refer to Robert Lambert’s involvement in initiating their relationship with Mr. Harrath. Robert Lambert is, according to the most recently available documents, an employee of iEngage, an online organisation which includes Mr. Harrath as one of its trustees.
