‘Honour’ crimes against women under-reported but rising rapidly in UK

The numbers of women and girls in the UK who are suffering violence and intimidation at the hands of their families in phenomena known as “Honour” crimes is increasing rapidly in the UK. And according to campaigners, we are only seeing a fraction of the full picture since most crimes go unreported.

Statistics obtained under the Freedom of Information Act about such violence – which can include threats, abduction, acid attacks, beatings, forced marriage, mutilation and murder – show that in the 12 police force areas for which comparable data was available, reports went up by 47% in just a year.

The figures, shared with the Guardian by the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation (Ikwro), also reveal that a small number of forces – including four in Scotland – are still not collecting data on how often such violence occurs.

Mohammed Shafiq and Swimwear

This is a guest post by Mr Happy

You may remember The Spittoon featured a story of Shanna Bukhari, a Muslim girl who had made it to the World finals of the much coveted, Miss Universe competition. ‘Good for her’ were the sentiments from this blog.

But, today, the BBC ran a similar story this time surrounding a faux-controversy over a swimsuit round to pass onto the next stage.

Weirdly, a big chunk of the article has the rants of Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadan Foundation.

Those of you who don’t know who Shafiq is, he rather enjoys blaming Islamic terrorism not on Islamism but on erm … anything else he can think of. In an interview to Haaretz, here is how he describes the Muslim community:

Hate Preacher Who Legitimises Rape To Talk In LSE Islamic Society “Celebration”

This is a guest post by Mr Happy

Looks like the LSE is in the news for all the wrong reasons again. If it isn’t Libyan blood money, then it’s cosying up to the most odious of hate-preachers.

For the committee of the London School of Economics’ Islamic Society’s 10th anniversary dinner, something special must have been ordered to mark the event. Speaking at the event is Muhammed Bin Adam Al-Kawthari, a vicious hate preacher.

Al-Kawthari is known for his extreme views on women, marriage, sexuality and violent Jihad.

From a website where you can post questions to him, he issues the following guidance for suitable punishments for those who commit adultery:

“If the crime of fornication is carried out by an individual who is sane, mature, Muslim and is married to a spouse who is also sane, mature, Muslim, and that their marriage is consummated, then the legal punishment is that he/she will be stoned to death (rajm). The Imam, witnesses and other Muslims would take part in the stoning.”

The First Anniversary of Gitagate

On the 7th February, 2010, Gita Sahgal was suspended by Amnesty International from her post as Head of the Gender Unit after writing an article voicing her fears that Amnesty International has damaged its reputation by partnering with Moazzam Begg and Cageprisoners.

Worldwide outrage, a facebook campaign and a global petition to restore integrity to human rights followed.

The result?

A vicious slander campaign against Sahgal, coordinated by pro-extremist reactionary bloggers and useful idiots – amongst them Sunny Hundal, Andy Worthington, Islamophobia-Watch etc.

Amnesty International initially claimed that they were not promoting Begg’s views, only his experiences. Then they decided that his view on jihad in self defence was ‘not antithetical to human rights‘.

Gita and Amnesty International parted company.

An internal review found that management had failed in their duty of ‘due diligence’ and had not investigated Cageprisoners. Although no investigation has been conducted, Amnesty International and other human rights groups have lined up to support Cageprisoners.

No Country For Christian Women

A frequently made defence of the Blasphemy Law in Pakistan:

“No-one has ever been executed under Pakistan’s blasphemy law”

While this is factually correct, it is a trope which ignores the violence and victimisation inflicted on Pakistan’s minorities by the slightest allegation of blasphemy. Take a look at this extremely distressing story of two Christian women who were beaten and publically humiliated by an angry mob over apparently frivolous blasphemy allegations. They and their family are now in hiding for fear of being killed.

“None of our relatives is ready to let us stay with them. They fear the wrath of the extremists, particularly after the assassination of Salmaan Taseer,” a male member of the family said over the phone from an undisclosed location.

The family and a non-governmental organisation that is helping them asked that their identities not be revealed, lest it put them in further danger. The names mentioned here are fictitious.

Why Imam Abu Sayeed is wrong on rape

In a recent interview with the Samosa blog, the head cleric of the UK Islamic Sharia Council, Sheikh Maulana Abu Sayeed, backed rape in marriage and suggested that it was “un-Islamic” to prosecute the perpetrator. He didn’t end there – he went on to say that it was an act of “aggression” against the man to prosecute him for rape, rather than protect the safety of the real victim, the woman. Imam Abu Sayeed remains unapologetic and stands by these remarkable statements.

This is what Tehmina Kazi had to say:

It is clearly counter-productive for women to report marital rape cases to sharia councils. Firstly, there is usually no real punishment for the offender and insubstantial recourse for the victim. While conviction rates for rape in the British criminal justice system have never been reflective of reality (the national average was 5.3 percent, or 1 in 20 reported cases, as of 2005), these vary widely from area to area, from 13.8 percent in Northamptonshire to just 1.6 percent in Suffolk. Also, the British criminal justice system is far ahead in terms of taking marital rape as seriously as any other kind of rape, criminalising it in 1991.

Get Over the Quran Burning

This is a cross-post by Asma Q. Nomani from the Beast

On the plan to burn Qurans this weekend, I say to Muslims: Let’s get over the symbolic insult and deal with the very real issues of literal interpretations of the Quran that are used to sanction domestic violence, terrorism, militancy, and suicide bombings in the name of Islam.

Gen. David Petraeus has weighed in, saying that the planned burnings by the Rev. Terry Jones‘ congregation in Florida will endanger U.S. soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. But I believe that there is something that endangers Americans and American soldiers even more: certain passages that—when read literally—pit Muslims against Americans and the West.

We, as Muslims, need to tear a few pages out of the Quran.

Bangladesh Declares Fatwa Illegal

All extra-judicial punishment, including passing religious edicts or fatwa, have been declared illegal in Bangladesh.

The petitions were filed following several newspaper reports and investigations by the petitioners into violence inflicted on women in the name of fatwa by local religious leaders and powerful corners.

It was alleged in the petitions that a number of deaths, suicides and incidents of grievous hurt of women were reported arising from punishment given in salish, but the law-enforcement agencies took no action to prevent those unlawful actions.

This can only be good news for the thousands of victims of extra-judicial punishments, the large majority of whom have traditionally been women. A catalogue of abuses against women by decree of sharia court and by fatwa have been recorded in Bangladesh over the years by human rights groups. Some of them have been described in this article. Interesting to find Bangladeshi clerics quoted in that article, warning against the travesties of justice instigated by spurious sharia judges who, for a fee, spout fatwas:

Smearing the new MP

The journalist Ted Jeory has started ‘Trial By Jeory‘, a new blog about politics in East London. This is a cross-post.

****

Rushanara Ali

I first met Rushanara Ali, Labour’s new MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, three years ago when she was campaigning to become the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency. I was at the East London Advertiser at the time and we had printed her photo to illustrate the lead item on my column.

Days later, one of her rivals in that race, who is now an extremely senior figure at the council (I’ll let you guess), moaned that we had made her look “beautiful”. It was the first taste I had of the bitter jealousy felt towards her, just because she was a woman.
