Two Headed Turkey

Here’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, Islamism’s favourite democratic politician, talking big on the issue of Palestinian self-determination:

Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday told Arab foreign ministers in Cairo that recognition of a Palestinian state was “not an option but an obligation”.

“It’s time to raise the Palestinian flag at the United Nations,” Mr Erdogan told his audience. “Let’s raise the Palestinian flag and let that flag be the symbol of peace and justice in the Middle East.”

The prime minister’s appeal significantly raised the diplomatic temperature days before Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, is due formally to submit his statehood initiative to the Security Council.

And here’s where his actions speak louder than words on the issue of Kurdish self-determination:

Turkish troops backed by fighter jets and helicopter gunships have pursued Kurdish rebels into Iraq.

Simply A State for Palestine

The Palestinians nudge closer to achieving a recognised state, as their application to the UN Security Council goes to the vote later today. Obama will inevitably veto it, no surprises there. So will France. But if the Palestinians can get past the UNSC to the General Assembly they will win membership to the UN by a large majority, giving them “observer” status to the UN, similar to that of the Vatican. This could then lead to full membership if they continue to play their cards right.

UN membership for Palestine is a good thing in principal. And, if it can be achieved, it will be good in practice for both Palestinians and Israelis for two reasons:

It will strengthen the hand of the moderate Palestinian consensus and isolate the Hamas contingent. No one opposes the UN bid led by Mahmoud Abbas more than his compatriots in Hamas. The Arab Spring and the possibility of UN recognition could weaken the legitimacy of Palestinian Islamist politics.

There are more things in heaven and earth

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 5

This could possibly be the best retort to those holier-than-thou-Islamists and lefties-without-a-cause who like to dictate to Muslims and everyone else the kind of doctrinaire politics which they are convinced are justifiably cause celebre and of singular importance to the the lives and personal politics of every man, woman and child who lives on this earth.

Iranians chanting at a football match about more pressing and relevant issues which concern them than certain others forced down upon them by the regime?

“No Gaza! No Lebanon! My life for Iran!”

You can almost hear they them say it:
“Imagine that, eh? How can those Iranians be so goddamn selfish and insensitive? What a bunch of wayyycist Zionazi neocons!”

“Senseless attacks which block any attempts for peace”

This is a press release issued by British Muslims for Israel

*************

Press Release: British Muslims for Israel condemns Jerusalem Bomb Plot

British Muslims for Israel condemns the terrorist attack in Jerusalem today. Such acts of indiscriminate violence are never justified, hurt the cause of Palestinians and harden public opinion in Israel.

Hasan Afzal, a spokesperson for British Muslims for Israel says “Today’s attacks seem to be of a piece with the extreme violence perpetrated against Israelis in the last few weeks. First we had the Itamar massacre, then a barrage of rocket attacks from Palestine into Israel and now the attack in Jerusalem. These attacks hurt all sides, and help no one.”

Afzal added “Recent events have shown that groups such as Hamas and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade are determined to kill indiscriminately and use ordinary Palestinians as hostages to their cause. We urge all British Muslims to condemn these senseless attacks which block any attempts for peace and ruin the lives of both Israelis and Palestinians”.

Heroin

The very wonderful Mona Eltahawy has written an important piece on the (imminent?) Egyptian Revolution, which you can read here. In there is a passage that could be controversial:

Meanwhile, the uprisings are curing the Arab world of an opiate, the obsession with Israel. For years, successive Arab dictators have tried to keep discontent at bay by distracting people with the Israeli-Arab conflict. Israel’s bombardment of Gaza in 2009 increased global sympathy for Palestinians. Mubarak faced the issue of both guarding the border of Gaza, helping Israel enforce its siege, and continuing to use the conflict as a distraction. Enough with dictators hijacking sympathy for Palestinians and enough with putting our lives on hold for that conflict.

I don’t see the British “liberal left” or advocates of British Muslim identity politics weaning themselves off that particular “distraction” anytime soon.

Gaza Youth’s Manifesto for Change

The manifesto by a group of young secular men and women in Gaza has attracted some press attention and gone viral around facebook. The overriding sentiment of the manifesto is an overall “dissatisfaction and frustration” -(to say the least!) with all the players and stakeholders. This is how it opens:

Fuck Hamas. Fuck Israel. Fuck Fatah. Fuck UN. Fuck UNWRA. Fuck USA! We, the youth in Gaza, are so fed up with Israel, Hamas, the occupation, the violations of human rights and the indifference of the international community!

It continues:

We do not want to hate, we do not want to feel all of this feelings, we do not want to be victims anymore. ENOUGH! Enough pain, enough tears, enough suffering, enough control, limitations, unjust justifications, terror, torture, excuses, bombings, sleepless nights, dead civilians, black memories, bleak future, heart aching present, disturbed politics, fanatic politicians, religious bullshit, enough incarceration! WE SAY STOP! This is not the future we want!

not in our name – and not in the name of Torah

usually, when responses to the latest act of settler militancy are announced, they tend to fall into four different categories:

1. standard “deplore and condemn” statements from the peace camp, from leftie organisations like peace now, b’tzelem, adalah, rabbis for human rights and so on.
2. standard “you see what we have to deal with, this just makes peace more difficult” statements from the palestinian authority and allied bodies
3. standard “vowing revenge on the zionists” rhetoric from the likes of hamas and its fellow travelers.
4. anodyne PR-speak from the military authorities making excuses for why they weren’t able to prevent the incident or prosecute the people involved

what is usually absent is the voice of religious traditionalism – except, unfortunately when it is supporting the obscene “price tag” policy that is bringing the settlement enterprise into further disrepute.

ovadia yosef now officially candidate for tinfoil hat

the 90 year-old rabbi ovadia yosef is a controversial political and religious figure, to say the least. as emeritus sephardi chief rabbi of israel, the leading sephardi voice in the haredi world and de facto leader of the ultra-religious “shas” party (the only officially zionist haredi party) which forms part of the current israeli coalition government, he is a figure of considerable influence around the world and a key political player in israeli politics, as well as being the perennial winner of the “snazziest traditional get-up, complete with turban and sunglasses” award.

The Ahmadiyyah Movement: Not so moderate

This is a guest post by Raziq

Followers of the Ahmadiyya movement (known as Ahmadis) are often victims of religious bigotry. They have long been popular targets of religious extremists and have suffered a great deal, especially in Pakistan where they have been continuously persecuted.  Like most commentators on this site I utterly deplore such actions and I defend the right of Ahmadis to freedom of religion.

I personally spent a number of years studying Ahmadi literature, meeting their leaders and discussing their beliefs.  In this article I intend to explain their beliefs, their attitudes towards other faiths and their political views.

Date Hate

This is a cross-post by habibi from Harry’s Place

Here’s a report in The Guardian about the latest antics of Ismail Patel’s “Friends of al Aqsa”.

British Muslims are being urged to boycott Israeli dates when breaking their fast during Ramadan in protest at the continued occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Campaign organisers Friends of Al Aqsa hope the boycott will dwarf previous attempts to hit Israel in the pocket, capitalising on the attention afforded to the plight of Palestinians by the deadly Israeli attack on a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza at the end of May.

The focus is on dates because of their symbolic importance to Muslims, who traditionally consume them at sunset during the holy month – due to begin on Wednesday next week – to break the daylight fast.
