The Guardian Gagged by Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin of the MCB

Last week, the Guardian published an article in which the author, Delwar Hussain, named a number of prominent British Muslims who have been associated with war crimes in the Genocide of East Pakistan in 1971.

We discussed the article on the Spittoon, in which we expressed our expectation that the Guardian was bound to get sued by Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin for publishing Delwar’s piece:

Being an extremely litigious sort of individual, published reports which recounted these allegations have almost always been silenced by a swift libel notice from Mueen-Uddin’s lawyers and it is very likely that the Guardian might also be forced to retract that article in a similar manner.

Harry’s Place made a similar assertion:

Mueen-Uddin usually responds to these reports by instructing Carter Ruck to fire off a letter before action. Perhaps he won’t this time, and is now content to be described as a war criminal and the murderer of Bangladeshi patriots. If not, I hope that the Guardian stands its ground when the letter before action comes flying.

Spittoon Exclusive: Dalia Mogahed’s letter to the Sunday Telegraph

This is a guest post by Al-Qanaas Al-Masri

****

Through a source, who must for obvious reasons remain anonymous, I have received a copy of a letter that Dalia Mogahed, an advisor to Obama, wrote to The Telegraph in response to their coverage of her decision to appear on the Islam Channel on a programme run and hosted by Hizb ut-Tahrir. The letter reads:

Dear Sirs;

I am writing in response to the 8 October article “Barack Obama adviser says Sharia Law is misunderstood” by Mr. Gilligan and Mr. Spillius.

I was on the Muslimah Dilemma program as a pollster, not a pundit. I did not take issue with the objectionable remarks of the host or the guest because as a Gallup analyst my job is to explain the opinions of others, in this case Muslims around the world, and not to present my personal opinions. I do not in any way endorse Hizb ul Tahrir.  My participation in the program does not serve as endorsement of any group or cause.

Obama’s Advisor and the Promotion of Hizb ut-Tahrir

This is a guest post by Al-Qanaas Al-Masri

****

Since taking office, President Obama’s administration has tried hard to break with Bush-era ‘them and us’ rhetoric and reach out to ordinary Muslims around the world.

However, I don’t think that anyone thought this policy would include publicly sucking up to Hizb ut-Tahrir, a group which, much like al-Qaeda, aspires to create a global, totalitarian and expansionist Caliphate.

And yet, as Counter Terrorism News website reveals, this is precisely what has now happened.

On Sunday, Dalia Mogahed (pronounced ‘mujahid’), a high-profile member of President Barack Obama’s Faith Advisory Council, spent 45-minutes on the Islam Channel’s programme ‘Muslimah Dilemma’ alongside fellow guest, Nasreen Nawaz, HT’s national women’s media representative (the video is available here).

There are some initial problems with this:

-          The Islam Channel is a hardline wahhabi/Islamist outfit run by Mohammed Ali Harrath, a convicted terrorist who is wanted by Interpol.

The MCB: The Taint of Genocide

In May 1995 a Channel 4 documentary ‘Bangladesh, War Crimes File’ directed by David Bergman made allegations of the involvement of three British Bangladeshis in the genocide committed in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1971.

Smile like you mean it

Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin

Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin, one of those individuals named in the documentary, was alleged to have been instrumental in plotting the assassinations of intellectuals, journalists and students with the al-Badr death squads, assisted by the Jamaat-e-Islami. The program included eyewitness accounts directly linking Mueen-Uddin to the murders of two men; Dr. M H Choudhaury, a professor at the University of Dhaka, and Najmul Huq, a journalist.

Channel 4 received a letter from Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin’s lawyers and very little of that documentary has been heard of since. Until today, when Delwar Hossain re-opened the discussion on the Bangladesh War Crimes and Mueen-Uddin’s involvement in them in an article on CiF:

Macaroon’s idea of a “roadshow” – RIOT!

Macaroon member demonstrating his wit and intellect

One of the hazards of being a London resident these days is that, if you decide to go to your local high street on a Saturday morning to do a spot of shopping, you risk running into Anjem Choudary and his (tiny) collection of belligerent, under-thinking (and undersexed) young men sometimes known as al-Muhajiroun (or al-Macaroon here at the Spittoon) and the “roadshows” they organise to try and identify vulnerable targets for radicalisation.

Last weekend it was the residents of Camden who woke up to find it was their turn to host these misfits. Although their video suggests that the “roadshow” passed off peacefully, this was not the case. Have a look at these photos:

Times Exposes Jack Straw Links With Blackburn Radicals

This is cross-post from the Standpoint blog Focus on Islamism by Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens

****

Jack Straw is well known to be a fan of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), and today the Times has revealed the extent of his dealings with them.

According to today’s report:

A secret MI5 report on Islamic extremism in Blackburn has raised “potential concerns” about some radical Muslim factions known to Jack Straw, the local MP and justice secretary.

A senior security figure who has seen the report said it underlined concern among cabinet colleagues that Straw could be “too close” to the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), a prominent Muslim umbrella group. The government formally severed links with the group after a blazing row over extremism earlier this year.

Amnesty UK’s Blind Spot

We at the Spittoon are opposed to detention without due process and we firmly believe that the need to put an end to it is non-negotiable and opposition to it is imperative within any free society. It makes no difference whether the extra-judicial detainment happens to take place in Sudan, Iran, Pakistan or Guantanamo.

So we support, in principle, initiatives like the Guantanamo Bay Rally held yesterday, organised by Amnesty UK. It boasted quite a high-profile line up of speakers and backing organisations.

Speakers;
Louise Christian from Christian Khan Solicitors
Imran Khan from Imran Khan Solicitors
Kevin Laue from Redress
Amnesty Representative
Sunny Hundal from Pickled Politics
Representative from Reprieve
Helen Bamber from Helen Bamber Foundation
Andy Worthington journalist and author of ‘The Guantanamo Files’

Organisations in support include;
Redress
London Guantanamo Campaign
Cage prisoners
Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers

No such thing as Islamism?

We are often told (by Islamists here in Britain) that there is no such thing as Islamism. It is just “politically active sincere Muslims”. Right, tell that to your Islamist buddies overseas.

The Moroccan security services also say Belliraj was the author of six assassinations in Belgium between 1986 and 1989, cases which the Belgian police failed to solve.

“I lived in Belgium for more than 40 years and no policeman came knocking at my door to accuse me of trafficking weapons or killing anyone,” Belliraj said during the trial. “I am an Islamist, but I have no plan to overthrow the regime.”

And:

Sarsur told journalists at a press conference recently that, “From an ideological perspective, we believe that government on earth, at least on Muslim and Arab lands, needs to be an Islamist government led by a Khalif (heir of Muhammad).”

Syed Qutb: The Philosopher of Militant Islamism

This is a guest post by Raziq

****

What’s wrong with Syed Qutb? I’ve heard this said many times by different people. Some see him as a hero, others the inspiration behind terrorist movements like al-Qaeda. There are even those, like Inayat Bunglawala, who see him as nothing more than a little controversial.  In this article I will be taking a brief look at Qutb’s life and ideas, and why he is still admired by militant Islamist movements today.

Early Career

Syed Qutb was born in 1906 in Musha in the Asyut province of Upper Egypt.  In his early twenties he moved to Cairo and worked as a teacher for the Ministry of Public Instruction. During this period he was also interested in literature and became known as a literary critic. It is noted that Qutb was liberal in the early part of his life, at one point he even advocated nudism:
