Ekram Haque was attacked as he returned from a mosque

A pensioner who was attacked in south London as he returned from a mosque has died from his injuries.

Ekram Haque, 67, a retired care worker, was assaulted in Church Lane, Tooting, on 31 August.

Four boys, aged 12, 15 and two 14 year olds, have been charged with conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH).

All four are also accused of attacking two other men before the attack on Mr Haque. The four boys will appear at Sutton Youth Court on Tuesday.

Police are now treating the death of Mr Haque as murder.

All four boys face two counts of actual bodily harm (ABH) in connection with the attack on the two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 70s, on 31 August.

A Question of Priorities

Islamophobia Watch recently launched a disgraceful attack on Lucy James, author of a new paper dismantling the BNP’s attacks on Islam. As shown here at the Spittoon, their article was entirely scurrilous.

This affair made me do something which I normally avoid at all costs, read Islamophobia Watch. And when I was reading their latest nonsense I noticed something interesting. On the left hand side of Islamophobia Watch’s website is a list of categories of articles on the website.

At the very top is the category ‘Anti-Muslim violence’ whilst at the bottom of the (long) list is ‘Yusuf al-Qaradawi’. If you are unfamiliar with this name, he is the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, a man who supports wife-beating and FGM and who doesn’t like Jews or innocent Israelis very much.

The rise of the far-right and anti-Muslim bigotry

Last weekend saw some ugly scenes in Birmingham when a group calling itself Casuals United held a protest in the City Centre. There was a similar protest held in Birmingham last month well.

Casuals United say they are only opposed to Islamist extremism but that is not the case. The group is little more than a fascist front, opposed to all Muslims in Britain as this clip of their protest last month demonstrates:

Notable chants in the video come at:

  • 6:26 – I just want Muslim scum to go (a person off camera says this to whoever is filming)
  • 6:48 – We want Muslims out
  • 7:42 – Who are you? Who are you? (The implication being that Muslims are not British)
  • 9:08 – Muslims out

Yahya Birt hits the nail on the head

Last month the Centre for Social Cohesion (CSC) published a report on the BNP authored by Edmund Standing which caused quite a stir. The controversy stemmed from a baseless and, frankly, absurd allegation that CSC was deliberately seeking out to minimise and downplay anti-Muslim bigotry. The insinuation behind that charge is pretty clear and you don’t need me to spell it out.

Two things need to be said about Standing’s report. The first is that it does cite examples of the BNP’s anti-Muslim bigotry and these are mentioned throughout the report. The second is that the report itself never set out to provide a conclusive study on the BNP’s ideology – it was instead an investigation of their ‘online fascist network’ exploring the views of BNP members, sympathisers and supporters on places like YouTube and the blogosphere.

Islamophobia Watch – Dimwit Unlimited

Islamophobia Watch have found another less-than-worthwhile cause to throw their “might” behind – defending global Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir from their critics.

In reality, Hizb ut-Tahrir is a peaceful if highly sectarian organisation that poses no threat whatsoever to the people of East London. But what can you expect from the Tories, given that David Cameron is on record as calling for HT to be made illegal?

Needless to say, Cameron isn’t calling for a ban on the far-right British National Party, even though no HT members have been convicted of the sort of violent crimes that BNP members have. Clearly the Tories apply different standards to white fascists than they do to brown Islamists.

Alaa al-Aswany is wrong to accuse the West of double standards

This is a guest post by Shiraz Maher from the Hitchens-Maher ‘Focus on Islamism’ blog.

****

Alaa al-Aswany is a good novelist. I enjoyed the Yacoubian building, a clever and witty exposition of Egypt after the rise of Nasser. Aswany’s writing has sensitively chronicled modern Egypt ever since. All this makes his paranoid ramblings in the Guardian on Monday even more disappointing.

He argues the West is inherently hostile to Islam, fuelled by a series of double standards and inconsistencies. Unfortunately, the arguments he offers are little more than straw men.

For example, Aswany writes:

Elections recently took place in Iran and the winner was President Ahmadinejad. But there were allegations of vote-rigging. Western governments were up in arms, issuing strongly worded statements in support of democracy in Iran.

Dispelling the Eurabia Myth

Back in 2004 a “much cited” study authored by the US National Intelligence Council put forward a number of possible projections for the numbers of Muslims who would living in Europe by the year 2025. At its most aggressive, it came up with the scenario of an increase from 20 million today (about 5% of the population) to 38 million in 2025. It turns out that the study had predicated these projections on ”diplomatic and media reporting as well as government, academic, and other sources”.

The study is shown to be an overstatement of the data that it presents itself. Says Jytte Klausen, an authority of Islam in Europe at Boston’s Brandeis University:

“There is a quite deliberate exaggeration, as has often been pointed out—but the figures are still being cited,”

This comes from the lead article in the current edition of Newsweek which conclusively debunks the Eurabia myth once and for all in the article ‘Dispelling the Myth of Eurabia’.

Dog Bark Politics

I’m replicating below an important and brilliant post by Dave Rich of the CST. You’ll remember, this is the same CST those insane fools at the IHRC falsely accused of ‘Islamophobia’ before we dismantled their arguments here and the CST blew them out of the water here.

******************************

On Wednesday Nick Griffin, BNP leader and newly-elected Member of the European Parliament, told the BBC that boats carrying illegal immigrants to Europe should be sunk as they cross the Mediterranean. In an attempt to show his humane side, he insisted that he did not want anyone to actually die: “they can throw them a life raft and they can go back to Libya”.

He has followed this up with an interview four Channel 4 News, in which he described Islam as a “cancer” that needed to be treated with “global chemotherapy”:

Sinophobia trumps Islamophobia

Sinophobia trumps Islamophobia.

At least it does for certain sections of the British far Left who have defended China’s long running, brutal repression of the autonomy and self-determination of ethnic minorities such as the Turkic Uighurs, which has recently flared up.

Bear in mind that this is the same section of the far Left which professes to “defend the rights” of the “oppressed” muslim community of Britain by the formation of the communalist, Islamist-dominated RESPECT party.

And representative of that Left is Andy Newman of SocialistUnity, who makes it clear that recent repression of the Uighurs is nothing more than a Western “Sinophobic reading of the situation” :

The Sinophobic reading of the situation there seems to be that the Chinese government are Han chauvinists, suppressing national minorities, persecuting the Islamic religion, and seeking to swamp Xinjiang with Han settlers. But this analysis simply doesn’t accord with the facts.

Silence on the Plight of the Uighurs

Violence has escalated and riots have engulfed Urumqi city in Xinjiang province. The Times reports 156 dead, 800+ injured, blood-stained roads, burnt-out cars and buses littering the abandoned streets. Most of the victims, the object of the violence in fact, are Turkic Uighurs.

China’s authorities have repeatedly blamed the US-exiled Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer for stirring up trouble in the region.

“Using violence, making rumors, and distorting facts are what cowards do because they are afraid to see social stability and ethnic solidarity in Xinjiang,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in Beijing during a blistering verbal attack on Kadeer, who has denied the allegations.

Li Zhi, Urumqi’s highest-ranking Communist Party official, also railed against Kadeer as he addressed the angry Han mobs. Standing on an armored police vehicle, Li pumped his fist as he shouted through a megaphone, “Strike down Rebiya!”
