a few good rabbis?

for those of you who aren’t aware of it, this has not been a good couple of years for the orthodox, “strictly-”orthodox and ultra-orthodox communities. corruption around kosher slaughterhouses and conversions, sex scandals, money-laundering, drug smuggling, you name it. all the usual justifications are made, of course, all the usual people accept them and all the usual people sneer at them.

in such an environment, it’s extremely helpful to be able to point to people who can stand up and say in no uncertain terms: this isn’t right. excusing it is even worse. as it says in the Mishnah: where there are no men, at least you should try and act like a man. i am encouraged to see at least some orthodox rabbis swimming against the tide of denial although, of course, not that surprised to see the perennial awkward squad-nik and contrarian (and my own much revered teacher) rabbi jeremy rosen, writing in haaretz:

ray hanania on the stupidity of pro-hamas leftie activists

well, no surprises here – ray hanania, writing in the jerusalem post, finds plenty to criticise about the sort of activist that is perpetuating the sad situation in the gaza strip, in the now-established tradition of leftie imbeciles sucking up to clerical fascists as an act of anti-imperialist egotism.

and, of course there’s none more egotistical that our good friend, saddam-fancying cat-impersonator ”gorgeous george”.

george laps it up

george laps it up

These are strange bedfellows in the Palestinian extremist camps, religious fanatics shoulder-to-shoulder with secular extremists like the Popular Front and the rejectionists led by the activists and fawned on by the Arab media that mistakenly believe “freedom” means embracing the most extremist activists.

you never spoke a truer word, ray.  for G!D’s sake, please keep doing this. palestine needs your sanity, rationality and humanity, rather than serving to remind us all of the intransigence and lack of compassion for real human beings – other than as symbols of something-or-other-from-la-la-land-ideology – demonstrated by these smug, self-satisfied self-publicists:

a modest proposal for wootton bassett: islamists love underpants!

pantsalthough the mainstream media has already picked up the story, we’re sure that the good folk of wootton bassett would nonetheless appreciate a message of support. it appears that they are the latest stop on the publicity circuit for everyone’s favourite islamist nutjobs, the al-muhajigoon squad. predictably, the edl have vowed to picket the mosques frequented by the leader of the group that currently calls itself “islam4uk” and, no doubt, stephen gash of “sioe” has ordered an extra copy of “soldier of fortune” magazine in his excitement.

in the spirit that got these imbeciles to cancel their most recent demo and, naturally, in tribute to the recent foiling of the detroit pants bomber, i humbly propose the following:

let all who wish to show this truly grotesque man up as the nasty, ridiculous bigot he is – FLY THE UNDERPANTS!

some pants yesterday

some pants yesterday

Khamenei Trampled Underfoot

Effective metaphor for the popular movement against the Islamist regime that is underway in Iran in this video:

“Tipping Point” in Iran

The end is nigh for the Iranian regime. The pro-democracy Green Movement has shown itself to be equal to the Islamist regime’s use of extreme force, mass arrests, show trials, torture and rape in prisons with its ever-growing, relentless and peaceful campaign of civil disobedience.

Meanwhile the Baseej are defecting in numbers as shown in this video:

And in this picture:

Basij Defects

The Green Movement is approaching a critical mass which presents a greater counter force than the government can possibly bear. Nor did the regime help itself by making a martyr of the nephew of the leading opposition leader. Juan Cole sees this adding insult to injury and more trouble ahead for the administration:

Peter Tatchell stands down as Green candidate

The human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has announced he will stand down as a parliamentary candidate for the Green party in Oxford East. He explains:

I was selected as the Green Party candidate for Oxford East in April 2007. A month later, I was badly beaten around the head by neo-Nazis during an attempted Gay Pride parade in Moscow.

This exacerbated the brain damage caused when I was bashed unconscious by President Mugabe’s bodyguards in Brussels in 2001, after attempting to make a citizen’s arrest of the Zimbabwean leader on charges of torture.

Following the Moscow assault, I never rested and recuperated. I carried on campaigning, with a very heavy schedule of commitments in Oxford East. After several months, I was severely exhausted. This stress and exhaustion probably intensified the damage and thwarted my recovery.

Hope not Hate in Harrow

SIOE Leader Stephen Gash had said that the SIOE demo at Harrow Central Mosque yesterday would attract 2,000 supporters out of the 3,200 he claimed as total membership for his organisation. However, the BBC reports that fifteen SIOE protesters turned up in Harrow. Although from my estimates, fifteen is possibly overly generous of Aunty.

Asim Siddiqui sees at least one encouraging sign in the rise of white-race supremacist movements of the far-right resurgent all over Europe and now getting its freak on in Britain:

BMSD: Taking a stand against ‘Stop the Islamisation of Europe’

It is very encouraging to see secular, pro-democracy Muslims take on the anti-Muslim nutters on their own terms. Read the BMSD’s (British Muslims for Secular Democracy) open letter (pdf) to Stephen Gash of the anti-Muslim hate group, ‘Stop the Islamisation of Europe’ in anticipation of SIOE’s planned demo outside Harrow Central Mosque on December 13.

The administration of the Harrow Central Mosque has some very dodgy affiliations.

YMOUK is the youth wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. The Islamic Forum Europe (IFE) is also Jamaat-e-Islami linked, and also runs a blog on which senior IFE people praise the likes of the jihadists, al-Awlaki and Abdullah Azzam. Islam Channel is run by a convicted Tunisian Muslim Brotherhood/an-Nadha terrorist, and broadcasts material by Hizb ut Tahrir, and Yasir Qadhi, and a host of other vicious and extreme bigots. Islam Expo is run by Mohammed Sawalha, who is a fugitive Hamas commander, who has been named in US court documents as a key Hamas fundraiser. And finally, Islam Online is al-Qaradawi’s website.

British Jews and Muslims Against Extremism

There is a superb article by Martin Bright in the Jewish Chronicle, in which he calls to British Jews and British Bangladeshi Muslims to form an alliance and take on the scourge of extremism of the neo-Nazis and the Islamists in East London.

I recently had the pleasure of addressing an audience of well-informed, liberal and politically committed Jews on the rise of radical Islam in Britain. I suggested it was a tragedy that east London, for so long associated with Jewish immigration and the fight against fascism, had now become the home of the Islamist extreme right.

How had East London Mosque and the London Muslim Centre, both dominated by Jamaat-i-Islami (South Asia’s version of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood) come to be the first port of call for British politicians? What did the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, think he was doing earlier this year when he praised ELC and LMC for tackling prejudice? The reality is that the institutions have played a central role in promoting a sectarian Islam that represents only one strand of thinking within the magnificent diversity of this world religion.

why it is wrong to talk about “banning shari’a law”

it has been brought to my attention by my esteemed colleagues here at the spittoon that one of the aims of the “one law for all” campaign, who are organising a rally on saturday 21 november, to “expose the discriminatory nature of religious law” and “put a stop to shari’a once and for all” because “opposing shari’a law is a crucial step in defending universal and equal rights”.

i will reiterate the reasons that i cannot support this:

1. what about jewish batei din and anglican ecclesiastical law?

some might consider this selfish, but shari’a courts must be allowed if the state is not to be guilty of severe double standards in respect of both jewish halakhah and christian canon law. although, obviously, some of the speakers (like the british humanist association and the national secular society) would argue that they would ban the lot and, indeed, maryam namazie herself says:
