Questions for Daud Abdullah

This is a cross-post by Shiraz Maher from Standpoint Magazine.

******************

So the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) is back in with government. It was not all that long ago that the Department for Communities and Local Government cut ties with the group after its Deputy Secretary General, Daud Abdullah, signed the Istanbul declaration which you can read in full here.

Framed as a ‘statement’ addressed to ‘all rulers and peoples concerning events in Gaza’, it condemns those who have ‘given up the choice of jihad in the way of Allah as an effective means in defeating the occupation’.

The document did not stop there. It also issued a number of ‘legal judgements’ which include:

Awlaki on Amnesty International

This is a cross-post of an article by habibi of Harry’s Place

****

Amnesty International UK has promoted Moazzam Begg of Cageprisoners for years, right up to a Downing Street publicity stunt earlier this month.

Begg and Cageprisoners in turn have promoted al Qaeda preacher Anwar al Awlaki. Just two weeks ago Begg was still defending him, with this laughable line about what happened after Awlaki’s detention in Yemen in 2006 and 2007:

After his release, I am told, Anwar’s position on issues pertaining to US foreign policy had started to become more hostile.

Begg continues:

A cursory look at Awlaki’s pre-incarceration lectures would clearly show just why he became so popular. He was not a radical ‘preacher of hate’ by any stretch of the imagination.

Israel’s religious system will bring to its demise

This is a cross-post of an article from Haaretz by Sefi Rachlevsky, author of ‘The Messiah’s Donkey’, the best-seller which critiqued the Jewish Orthodox establishment.

****

“A Bag of Fibs,” the classic collection of tall tales from the pre-state Palmach militia, tells of a truck driver sent from Tel Aviv to deliver a water cistern to Jerusalem. During the steep approach to the city, at Sha’ar Haggai, he slams on the brakes and the tank slips off the truck. While backing up in order to reload the tank, he falls in and drowns. Israel’s cistern is the religious autonomy that has grown within it.

In 1985 I spoke on Army Radio with Moshe Unna, then a leader of the National Religious Party and of the Religious Kibbutz Movement, which had created a world in which mixed dancing and egalitarian, socialist culture were taken for granted. In the middle of the interview, Unna suddenly grew quiet and began to cry. Eventually he said meekly that when he tried to speak to his own party, Haim Druckman would shout him down until the veteran MK was silent.

22nd January 2010

Dear Secretary of State,

Re: Dr Daud Abdullah

I am taking this opportunity to write to you after the appearance of several articles about my signing the Istanbul Declaration in the national media among them the Daily Telegraph and the Jewish Chronicle which quote an official statement from your Department as saying,

“We still have concerns about the uncertainty of Daud Abdullah’s personal position on this issue. Until he is able to provide the clarification that we have always been seeking we will not be engaging with him.”

Reza Pankhurst Responds

This is a guest post by Raziq

Reza has now produced a written response to the articles which appeared in The Times recently claiming that he was a member of Hizb ut Tahrir. It makes for very interesting and sometimes amusing reading. He says:

When applying to the LSE, I made it clear who I was and the views I was persecuted for in Egypt, and my hope that I could add a different voice and angle within academic circles that is mostly absent in a highly politicised field currently being filled largely by anti-terrorism careerists rather than serious research.

How dare the field be filled with ‘anti-terrorism careerists’, surely we need more HT-careerists eager to promote HTs insane ideology. It gets worse:

Juhayman al-Otaibi and the Siege of Mecca

This is a guest post by Raziq

********************

Juhayman al-Otaibi was a jihadist born and raised in Saudi Arabia.  He and his followers occupied the Grand Mosque of Mecca in the final months of 1979. After a bloody siege that lasted 3 weeks, he was eventually defeated and later executed along with 67 of his followers. This was the first major attempt by militant Islamists to take power and Juhayman’s legacy was not easily quashed. His message would continue to inspire future militants, including Osama bin Laden.

In this article I will be looking at the background of Juhayman and the events leading up to the siege of Mecca.

Saudi Arabia had been a backwater for many centuries, with the main source of income coming from pilgrims who visited every year during the Hajj season.  After the discovery of vast reserves of oil in the 1930s, Saudi Arabia was suddenly thrust into the global limelight and had unimaginable wealth.  This led to the country embarking on extensive building programs.  The Saudis were careful to balance conservative traditions with this process of modernisation.

None So Blind

This is a cross-post by habibi from Harry’s Place

The government and the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) are talking again:

“The Muslim Council of Britain has made a commitment to Government to examine their internal processes and ensure that the personal actions of all members, including senior leaders, remain true to the organisation’s agreed policies, avoiding a repeat of the issues which arose after one member signed the Istanbul Declaration.

“The MCB has stated its categorical opposition to attacks on British defence interests and confirmed its unwavering support for British troops across the world. It has also made clear that it stands firmly against Anti-Semitism and other forms of racism.

“The significance of these actions on the part of the MCB has led to the Government lifting the suspension of its formal relationship with that organisation. The MCB will now contribute to ongoing dialogue with Government as one amongst a wide range of Muslim organisations.

The BNP: Political party or quasi-religious cult?

This is a cross-post by Edmund Standing

****

Commenting on the time he had spent with Mark Collett and the BNP while filming for the Dispatches programme ‘Young, Nazi, and Proud‘, film maker David Modell stated:

To me, this organisation is no army, or even really a political party, more a fundamentalist movement – a cult.

This analysis of the BNP is as accurate as it was when Modell made his remarks in 2002. In many ways, the recent rise of the BNP as a political force has served to obscure the cult-like nature of the organisation, especially as it has now picked up single issue voters who are only really concerned about immigration and would have no interest in bizarre ideas about ‘the Ethno-State‘, conspiracy theories about ‘Zionists’, or the whacky pseudo-scholarship set out in Arthur Kemp’s ‘history of the white race‘, not to mention the occultism of the BNP Legal Director, or the Holocaust denial that founder member Richard Edmonds has spent decades promoting.

Kaboom and Brum

This is a cross-post by habibi of Harry’s Place

****

Azzam “Kaboom” Tamimi, one of the UK’s most radical Islamists, is scheduled to address a conference at the University of Birmingham on 20 January.

The conference is titled “In Pursuit of Justice: Remember Gaza” and is organised by the university’s student Islamic society (ISOC).

Tamimi’s fellow speakers will be Tony Benn and Mike Cushman of the British Committee for Universities for Palestine and Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods.

Tamimi is not the first radical guest of the ISOC. Just last month it hosted Abu Usamah At Thahabi, imam of the Green Lane Mosque in Birmingham, where Jew hating preachers are invited to speak and defended. Thahabi was barred from addressing an event at University College London (UCL) in November 2009, but was apparently still welcome in Birmingham the following month.

Wakkas Khan: Faithful Islamist

This is a cross-post by habibi of Harry’s Place

****

Here’s some news from the Department for Communities and Local Government. It has established a panel of 13 “faith advisers who will act as a ’sounding board’ to advise on effective engagement with faith communities, and the impact of Communities and Local Government policy on faith communities”. Here’s John Denham:

“This new panel brings together an unprecedented wealth of knowledge and experience that will help advise on the big issues facing society such as the economy, parenting, achieving social justice and tackling climate change.

“For millions of people the values instilled by their faith are central to shaping their behaviour. We should continually seek ways of supporting and enhancing the contribution faith makes to the decision-making process on the central issues of our time.
