OK, tail between legs....

but I think... you miss the point.

Muslims do not have a monopoly of religious zealotry - in overt terms perhaps they presently have the largest market share. It's all around us - but few care to point it out, particularly when it is *covert* or a matter of "public orthodoxy".

The sooner we (Brits) are out of Afghanistan the better for us and the undoubted innocent victims of another misjudged, half baked war . FFS *they* still sit around in the evenings under the village tree regaling one another with tales of slaughtering Alexander's Army. And Taleban ? Al Quaeda ? = mere PR contrivances for a gullible western public.

The problem is not there - it is closer to the geographical heartland of Islam, to to the West and South and I don't mean Yemen.

I don't think I suggested that I believed anything of the sort. I was simply correcting your error.

Now, do us a favour and troll elsewhere, there's a good chap.

Tom

Actually, it was supposedly the Prophet's cloak that Mullah Omar displayed; not his underpants. Oh, and the cloak is stored in Kandahar, not Jalalabad.

It is traditionally only brought out during times of crisis. It was prominently seen in 1994, when Mullah Omar removed it from the shrine and wore the coat while he stood atop a building, above a crowd of his followers in Kandahar. It was a brilliant move on his part in a bit of propaganda that associated him with Ahmed Shah Durrani and the Prophet of Islam at the same time. The crowd below yelled out Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful)... It has not been seen in public since 1996, during the Taliban's rise to power

Well, hate to be a pooper but my understanding is that this isn't terribly original.

IIRC Mullah Omar the well known Afghan jihadist made a display of the rather threadbare remains of THE PROPHET MOHAMMED's (pboh) underpants at Jalalabad when the first Yankee troops arrived after 9/11.

The assembled faithful onlookers were assured that simply the sight of said relics were most efficacious in the matter of deflecting infidel bullets. Allaaah, Ahkbar!

His touching faith is reflected in the attendance of our own ex-prime minister at a plastic box in London recently purportedly containing some French virgin's bones - wonder what he's trying to ward off eh?

hur hur hur.

you see, the thing i like about this is that it's the most english of responses and can be appropriated by anyone who gets it (a test in itself) in a variety of amusing ways to subvert the illiberal bigotry of the muhajigoons as well as being pressed into service the next time that "ol' lazy eye is back", as it were.

Flaming Fairy, on Harry's Place, has produced a nice skit:

The people’s pants are sparkling white
We will not put up with this shite
For Western freedoms to uphold,
We’ll risk our nadgers getting cold.

So raise your skivvies nonetheless
Your Calvin Kleins, your M and S
Though Ridleys flinch and Galloways sneer
We’ll keep our undies flying here.

it seems that the local council have now made clear their feelings:

Mayor of Wootton Bassett, Steve Bucknell, said “Wootton Bassett has, unwittingly, found itself in the media spotlight for the way it acts as a focal point for paying respects to fallen armed forces personnel. The people who attend the repatriations no doubt have a wide range of views about the conflicts, but those views are not voiced in our High Street, out of respect to those who have lost their lives and those who grieve for them.”

To date, the Town Council has not been consulted and is not aware of any request having been made to Wiltshire Police to hold a march.

nonetheless, whether this farce goes ahead or not, i think the principle of "pants to sheikh chuddie and the beards of terror" has been established and should be raised whenever they propose a new stunt.

Here's a report from China:

A NEW hospital has advertised its opening in central China by festooning its building with 500 underpants to advertise its specialty – treating urological diseases.

A doctor surnamed Xiong said it was his idea to hang the underpants from the building, along with a giant pair measuring four meters long by three meters wide, according to local Web portal Rednet.cn.

But the hospital in Changsha City, Hunan Province has attracted controversy, with some passers becoming embarrassed, according to the report. But one woman surnamed Duan said the city should be more open to bold moves like this.

The local advertising supervision authority said the underpants promotion did not come under its jurisdiction.

http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/article/2009/200909/20090911/article_413553.htm

Perhaps someone might ask the hospital if we could borrow the giant pair of pants measuring 4m X 3m for the counter-demonstration against Andy and the Beards of Terror?
