From the Latin American Herald Tribune:
MADRID – The “Dictionary of Islam and Islamism” prepared by doctor of Arab philology Luz Gomez Garcia is the first compilation in Spanish of more than 500 terms that ease the understanding of Islamic traditions, history and culture.
Through a bibliography grouped by subject and a chronology of the history of Islam since its beginnings in the year 610 A.D., Gomez reviews the terms used by the media “that don’t always have an easy translation.” …
The confusions begin with the distinction between Islam and Islamism, terms that the Royal Spanish Academy defines as synonyms.
“In Islamic tradition Islam is related to strictly religious aspects such as doctrine, theology, philosophy and even sociology, while Islamism is the ideological adaptation of Islamic precepts for political ends,” the author told Efe.
Amazing as it may seem, there are still some people who fail to distinguish between politically active Muslims (cf my fellow authors on this blog) and Islamists (cf these guys). Now no Spaniard has an excuse for making that mistake.

i’m afraid that the vast majority of people still have no clue WTF Islamism is, sometimes its easy for us who are obsessed with the subject to forget that. But, as many of you may have noticed, mainstream media has now begun to use the term quite frequently and this was not the case even a couple of years ago…so things are changing, but still a while to go yet!
An English version of Luz Gomez Garcia’s book needs to be published as well.
The author in the quote seems to have understood the distinction i.e. the ideological adaptation of Islamic ideas for political ends…
If he is making the distinction why say they are the same. unless he means they are used that way, which is true, people do use them in the same manner.
Just like the conflation of the term wahabi and sunni. These are also equated as if every sunni is wahabi. Anyway….
It’s all rather sad that the vast majority of Muslims who regard Islam as a private matter and not a wholely public one, let alone couch Islam in political terminology, are tarred by the same brush as the Islamists. The Great Satan does have a point though and, hopefully with less propaganda and more critical presentations of what Islam can be and is, UK citizens and other human beings will get the message.
Well spotted, Yossarian, my Armenian-American friend.
If it were tastefully printed I wonder whether the spitoon crew would
ever consider reading a book on Islam written by a Muslim scholar?
No -instead they learn about Islam from non Muslims!
Its akin to learning about Christianity or Judaism and never reading a book by a Christian or Jewish scholar. Pure colonialist bullshit.

Likewise people who fail to distinguish between ordinary decent Jews and Zionists. Hopefully moderate organisations like Neuterei Karta will continue to educate people that Jews and Judaism have nothing to do with Zionism
Yes I have read plenty thank you very much, any you want to discuss?
Muslim. Attack is not, in this case, the best form of defence. I suggest you respond to the points that have actually been made rather than making assertions about the writers of this blog and rambling about The Jews.

haha youre an Islamic scholar are you? who did you study with?
I don’t think he was claiming to be a scholar – he was just saying he has read books about Islam written by scholar. It was a reply to your earlier question. Honestly, you must start reading what people actually write; not what you think (or would like to think) they’re writing.
While we’re on this topic, which ‘scholar’ or ‘sheikh’ educated you? And what did they say about the bad language (eg, “bullshit”) that you are so keen to use? I’m sure its haram, no?
Still, you Islamists are so adept at weaselling your way out of everything, I’m sure you’ll try to justify this. If you were the sincere, devout man you claim to be you’d simply apologise for your language and attack-dog style. Remember, there’s no shame about matters of the deen. So, will you now take the opportunity to apologise for your foul-mouthed outburst?

I’ve read ‘real’ books on Islam by ‘real’ Islamic scholars…in Arabic. On your travels, Muslim, have you come across any Islamic treatises written by classical scholars on a synthesis between Islam and politics?
No -instead they learn about Islam from non Muslims!
What’s wrong with that? Many of the foremost scholars in the field of Islamology are non-Muslims. You’d be surprised to find that many non-Muslims love Islam so much that they spend their lives reading, researching, cataloguing and writing about Islam from a sympathetic, but not uncritical perspective.
hur hur hur hur. neturei karta? MODERATE??? are you fecking kidding me? there are less than 10,000 of them in the world – and they believe that anyone who doesn’t share their ideology isn’t really jewish. essentially they are a takfiri organisation and they are beyond the pale for most jews due to their willingness to be the dhimmi pets of anyone who wants to have a go at israel, up to but most especially including attendance and photocalls at ahmedinejad’s holocaust-denial conference.
“look, you see, i can’t be anti-jewish, here i am, shaking a REAL JEW’s hand – you can tell, he’s got a beard, a black hat, sidelocks, everything – a REAL jew. those others aren’t proper jews, obviously”.
this is a colossal con trick but i’ve never heard anyone try and describe nk as “moderate”. i’d be rolling on the floor if that wasn’t so outrageous.
